The inhabited town of oil industry workers is a unique monument of inhabited architecture of 40-50s of the XX century. Located in one of the prestigious districts of Atyrau, in the residential district "Zhilgorodok", he represents one of the ambitious projects of the Soviet architecture. The town of oil industry workers has been built in 1944-1952 by architects A.V. Arefyev and S.V. Vasilkovsky.

The history of the construction of the town reflects one of the important milestones in the history of our country. In the heat of the Great Patriotic War, in June 1943, the country was in great need of fuel. The decision to construct an oil refinery in the Guryev (Atyrau) region has been made.

For these purposes previously it was necessary to build the inhabited town for oil industry workers. Selecting the most economical, and, at the same time, the building material which is most adapted to severe conditions by Prikaspiya, the Soviet builders have stopped the choice on plaster plates. For their production in 1944, the special plaster plant near of Guryev has been constructed.

The town was built by forces of prisoners of war of Italians, Romanians, and during the period from fall of 1943 to spring of 1944. First of all, public buildings - club, school seven-year-old on 280 people, kindergarten, a day nursery, hospital with an outpatient clinic, a bath, bakery, a regional boiler room, a water tower, the station of transfer, trade rooms, hotel-dorm rooms have been built.

In the architecture of houses decisions, the most corresponding to the climate of the region has been applied. In a design and a decor of houses, the Central Asian architectural elements have been used: flat without balcony overlappings of buildings and arches, fresco painting, stucco moldings, wooden designs.

Glavnaya Street of the town – Auezov Avenue, is crossed with five crosses which, in turn, are crossed with small lanes, forming small quarters. Thanks to the thought-over system of green plantings around the town, in this area it was provided cool, in comparison with surrounding space. climate.

Architects have created the well-planned city for record-breaking short terms - 1943-1945. The total area of Zhilgorodk occupies about 55 hectares. For original town-planning architecture and belonging to the history of the development of oil-processing industry in Kazakhstan in 1982, the inhabited town is included in the State list of historical and cultural monuments of Republican value.
