Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the oldest Catholic Church in Kazakhstan. It is located in Petropavlovsk and has already become one of the main attractions in the city. Acting Temple belongs to the "Holy Trinity" Roman Catholic parish. There is CRS every day.
Being as the oldest Catholic parish in Kazakhstan, the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has a more than a century history. The descendants of the exiled Poles and Germans built the temple in 1911-1912. There were more than 3000 parishioners at that time in Petropavlovsk and surrounding area. Rector was Joseph Senvaytis.
Even at the end of the XIX century S.R. Vonsovich, S.C. Dobrovolsky, R.Y. Klopotovsky and other representatives of the Roman Catholic community of Petropavlovsk were repeatedly appealed to the General-Governor of Steppes, Minister of Internal Affairs, and Archbishop for permission to build a church in Petropavlovsk. Finally, such permit was obtained in 1898-1908. The church was built by funds of members of the Catholic community. 205 residents of Petropavlovsk and its environs signed the petition for permission.
According to the annual report of the diocese in 1911 at the Omsk dean, the Roman Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus had already been built and operated in Petropavlovsk. The Roman Catholic Church was mentioned among Petropavlovsk institutions and in "The memorial books of the Akmola region" for 1915 and 1916 years.
Initially, the church was located in a wooden building on Voznesensky Avenue (Lenin Str. during the Soviet period, now Kazakhstan Constitution Street). Sunday school worked for children’s to teach Catholics literacy on Sundays. A priest lived in this building. But the area of the church was not satisfied with the Catholic community, and it appealed to the General Governor of Steppes and the Ministry of Internal Affairs with a request to build a new brick church next to the existing wood. After the October Revolution in 1917, the church building was nationalized and given for housing to agricultural workers of the party.
A resident of Petropavlovsk Konstantin Stanislavsky Ushakov left evidence that the tower of the church was demolished in the 20s of the last century, and the building was converted into a warehouse. The building was rebuilt as a living room for the first secretaries of the regional party committee in the 30s. In addition, the living rooms of first secretaries had been equipped and a dining room for senior party workers and visitors of Petropavlovsk. The kindergarten "Zarya" had housed the building since 1956.
The building was given to the "Holy Trinity" Roman Catholic parish on 30 April 1999. The church was renovated in 1999-2001. It was consecrated second time by Bishop Pavel Lengo from Karaganda in 2002 since service is provided here for the parishioners twice a week.
In terms of architecture, the temple is a typical Polish church of the late nineteenth century. The well-made stone structure has a strict and restrained form without decoration. The loggia is an interesting architectural addition. As a spatial element, it significantly contributes to the plasticity of the building.
