Description

The grave site of the great Kazakh poet of the 19th century, free-thinker and inspirer of the rebellion of Makhambet Utemisov is situated in Inder, Atyrau region, 40 km to the south-east from the village Inderbor.

The poet's grave is considered to be the cultural monument and dated from 1846, initially, it was a big eight-faced sarcophagus closed with a massive tombstone, in 1995 it was totally reconstructed, and a beautiful mausoleum made of chalk stone was set in the place of the last repose of the poet.

For the first time, the grave of the great poet Makhambet Utemisov was investigated by the poet from Atyrau Berkhair Amanshyn in the 50-s of 20 century. In 1980 Ural expedition of the Ministry of Culture of the Kazakh SSR surveyed Makhambet Utemisov's grave. In 1995 it was decided to memorialize Makhambet Utemisov putting up a mausoleum above his grave.

The project stylizing the ancient oriental architecture was taken as a basis. The majestic building represents a many-sided tower, topped with a massive dome and decorated with planted bas reliefs. The construction is made of concrete, and snow-white shelly soil was applied to exterior and interior trim.

The diameter of the exterior circle is 7,6 meters; the interior circle is 6,2 meters. The height of the building is 6,4 meters, the dome's height is 1,8 meters, the outside diameter of the dome is 5,2 meters, the total height is 12,2 meters. The height of the entry stair is 1 meters, the density is 0,5 meters. A classical arch decorated with carved ornaments is stated before the entrance of the mausoleum. Generally, the whole composition looks as if it comes from those distant times when the surrounding steppe could hear the live voice of the great poet.

Makhambet Utemisov – an amazing and popular poet, was educated and knew several languages, he was a religious man who deeply understood Islam, and in Bukey Orda he was one of the prominent figures of that period.

Makhambet was born in 1803, after finishing medrese, he continued his study in Orenburg. After that, for over five years, he was a mentor of Bukey Orda Khan Dzhangyr's heir. Living well Makhambet couldn't accept unfairness reigning around and direct depression of Kazakh people on the part of the imperial administration.

In 1829 Makhambet Utemisov actively participated in the rebellion suddenly broken out in the Kazakh steppe, after the rebellion had been suppressed, the poet was committed to Kalmyk fortress where he spent as many as two years. In 1831 Makhambet could escape and became a spiritual inspirer of the other more massive riot under the leadership of Issatay Taimanov.

In 1836-1837 together with Issatay, he headed the rioting troop who strove against the oppression of the imperial administration and Dzhangyr Khan. The rioters are defeated in the battle at the river Akbulak, and Issatay Taimanov dies, Makhambet Utemisov manages to escape and runs southward, where he hides for several years.

In 1846 on October 20 the Kazakh poet Makhambet Utemisov was killed treacherously by hired assassins sent by his enemies. The pick of the poet's creation was during the rebellion of 1836-1837, the whole dramatic nature of the battle, resentment, heroism, and freedom loving common people are felt in his songs, in his poems he expressed aspirations and needs of the common people of the Kazakh steppes.

The poet, hero, freedom loving and volcanic warrior - Makhambet Utemisov will have a special place in the history of the Kazakh people forever.
